What You Need to Survive Outdoors
I'm a keen camper, but I'm certainly not as hardy as the likes of Ray Mears or Bear Grylls. For me it's fair weather all the way.
But some of my hardier mates were discussing the minimum needed to survive a few nights outdoors at this chilly time of year.
We concluded that the bare essentials would consist of shelter, somewhere warm to sleep and the means to create fire and find food and water. So this has resulted in a challenge for us to spend two nights and two days living and sleeping outdoors, in April.
We will take some tents, a cosy and warm sleeping bag for each of us along with a knife, some water along with warm clothes and footwear. This is all the camping gear that we'll be taking.
We're not allowing ourselves to take a lighter or matches, which will make it tough to start a fire and we will not be taking any food. This will mean foraging for nuts and berries, at a time of year when there isn't much available, and possibly trapping and eating rabbits, if we can.
This reminds me of a similar challenge that I undertook way back when I was a boy scout. On that occasion we were allowed to take a little food, but no shelter and no means of starting a fire. We had to build a bivouac and start a fire by means of friction. I remember that this was a lot of fun, but hard work.
The most useful thing that each of us took with us that time was our knives. You may have noticed how this is the key survival essential that Bear Grylls always has with him when he parachutes into a wilderness somewhere. Equipped with a well made knife you're able to cut wood for fire or a shelter. You have the tool you need to make a snare to trap rabbits and then skin it ready for cooking.
So I hope that you will wish me luck on my forthcoming survival challenge weekend. But I shall definitely be taking my mobile phone so if we don't have any luck with rabbits or road kill I'll be able to call for a pizza!
Are There Any More Devastating Words Than..?
"I only have 3 days left to live" for a shelter dog?
I found myself physically ill as I started looking at one of my local shelters who have had an absolute downpour of dogs dumped at their doorstep are now facing euthanasia if no one steps up and claims them or adopts them. Since April 1st, 42 dogs and puppies were dumped off at the shelters outdoor kennels, thats in addition to the typical 30 that reside in the shelter. Now, more than 30 of them will be euthanized in less than a week.
Its actually the highest number of dogs dumped since 2002, and it will be the highest amount of dogs euthanized in our area since 2003.
(JIC)Legit> How many dogs would you say are dumped at your local shelter every month?
On average our local kill shelter would get 20 per month. we are only able to rescue 10 a month out of the shelters when we [the SPCA were i volunteer] have the funding. I cannot tell you how sick to my stomach it makes me when i go to choose a couple dogs every few weeks. it's SO hard to choose. i sometimes feel like an executioner. deciding who will come to our no-kill shelter and who will not.
I try to choose dogs that i know would have the hardest time getting adopted from a shelter. we rarely take young puppies (unless it's a pregnant female) or the pup needs medical attention the city pound cannot afford. we automatically take any senior dogs...it's not fair to let them spend their last days that way after such a long life. i think THAT is criminal! (to dump an elderly dog at the kill shelter), we also focus on large breeds since the smaller dogs are adopted quickly from the kill shelter, and dark colored dogs (black, black and tan, dark brindle etc) since they are statistically the last to be chosen, everyone wants a white, or brown and white puppy.
Overy the last 6 months we have seen a huge increase in our kill shelters number, but our average of 10 per month has yet to change. we are about to raise our alloted number by 5 more per month hopefully as soon as SPCA manager and asst. manager okay it. the city pound has now been seeing upwards of 40 to 50 dogs a month! and a huge increase in pregnant females being dumped just before pups are born.
we all know why....the economy, and of course the usual yearly increase due to Xmas puppies being discarded after the novilty wears off. that and it is spring...dogs are-a-breedin', due to ignorant owners who don't spay/neuter.
*sigh* sometimes i feel so horrible about the situation i just want to hide under the covers and not leave my house, but i just remember that at least we can save 10 lives every month...little as it might seem it's something, and i've even let them know ill foster a few more dogs at a time if they need me. a couple of us have done this to help take the burden off the SPCA shelter due to the increase in strays, owner turn ins, and pregnant females at the kill shelter. we're trying our best.
edit:
to Wings: that is FALSE. Shelters work under city and state law. Now im not sure about ALL shelters in the US but i am very sure about my states shelters. they DO NOT sell dogs to labratories, that is illegal. they have 3 options-
1. find owners and return pet
2. work w/rescue groups and other no-kill shelters to get suitable dogs into good homes
3. wait the alloted time set by city/county law and then if no home or owner is found...euthanize.
I've lived and volunteered in many states and i've never seen a shelter give or sell dogs to a labratory. that's sickening.
