Pool Deck Design: How to Get Started

So you know that you have to come up with deck plans because you want to have a deck built in your backyard. Well in this case, there are a few steps that you are going to need to take to make sure that your pool deck design comes out just perfectly. This way you are not going to make any mistakes and you are going to have the pool deck of your dreams.

Size

Of course one of the first things that you are going to have to think about when it comes to pool deck design is the size that you want to have it. This will depend on a few different factors but more than anything the size of your yard. Obviously if you have a smaller backyard to begin with, you are not going to want to take up all the free space with your deck.

Therefore you are really going to need to pay close attention to detail when it comes to your pool deck design and the size that you want to have it built.

Color

Also when it comes to your pool deck design you are going to need to factor in color. The color that you choose for your deck is going to have a huge impact overall and so you want to be cautious with the color that you are choosing. The darker woods tend to look more luxurious and expensive, whereas the lighter woods are better if you want to achieve a more casual look.

Style

Now you are going to have to decide on the type of style that you want for your pool deck design. There are various different styles that you have to choose from and so you will certainly not be lacking here. Just consider what you want to do on the deck, for instance if you want to have a hot tub built in beside the pool or something, because you are going to have to factor this into the design early on.

These are all important issues to take into consideration when you are having your pool deck built, whether you are taking on the job yourself or you are having professionals do the work for you. There are always other resources and tools available as well that you can use to help you with your design, and you can call in a professional too if you really want the best advice.

thinking about building a hot tub deck?

basically iam putting in a hot tub so i was thinking of having the hot tub on the ground and then building a deck around it kinda deal. i know ive seen decks with concrete pillars not sure how to put those in. and if there required in bc canada. or would i b better off building a deck then putting the tub on top of it and build some stairs etc around it to blend it in with the deck. looking for some ideas

You're actually better off to build the deck around the spa if you can and you're ok with the look.
The reason is simple: Weight
For every 100#'s you're going to put on that deck you'll need to engineer the sub-structure to hold the weight. Since the weight of the spa varies depending on the spa size and gallon capacity it's hard to say exactly what you'd have to do for yours. But just as a general rule water is about 8#s per gal. So if your spa holds 1000 gals then you've got 8000#s just in the water alone.
If you're going to build around the spa you'll probably want the deck to be at the same level as the top of the spa.
So you just need to know how tall the spa is and how big of a deck you want to build. You can dig footings in the ground and put in post anchors, but if your deck isn't going to be very big I would suggest using pre-cast concrete piers that have a post anchor already embedded in them. Then figure the height of your posts by taking the height of your spa and subtracting out the height of the piers, the height of your beams, the height of your joists, and the thickness of your decking. If it gets too tall then you can use joist hangers on your beams and put your joists inside the beams instead of over the top of them to lower the overall height. It's pretty easy to do once you draw it out on paper. Anything you're not sure about check with your local building inspector or planning dept. Or check back here. Hope this helps......
