Worn out,sandy driving range, realistic?

In Texas with tons of golfers,you can either practice on hard turf mats or torn up grass with sand beneath instead of earth.

Find that many of my shots are hit fat just a bit,even while avoiding a divot. The sand instead of dirt underneath the grass seems to make less room for error(softer lie) and I have very few crisp contact hits. Otherwise on solid ground,the swing would be fine. Its just that if I only get reps on turf or sand,I wont have the same swing come gametime on real grass.

Is this fairly common?

yes it is . your hands have to be positned slightly ahead of the ball . ball back in stance . three-quater punch shots , great fundamentals needed dont give up
